What is Anti-racist Anti-oppressive Education?
Anti-racist Anti-oppressive education analyzes constructions such as race, class, gender, and sexuality.
Constructions of "difference" (from the dominant group), work to rationalize and maintain injustices and differential power accorded to them based on their status as "inferior".
Anti-racism works to dismantle the ideologies, policies and practices which keep structural oppressions in place. This requires an analysis of how power and privilege is maintained within institutions such as government, the justice system, and education.
Racism, sexism, classism, homophobia and other "isms" work to justify an unequal relationship. They justify the unequal distribution of power and access to resources such as land, food, and water. They also justify differential treatment in our institutions such as government, the economy, the justice system, and education.
